Our Community

The Quay County Community
Low cost of living. High quality of life.

With an array of recreational and cultural activities, strong health and human services, affordable land and housing, and a mild year-round climate, Tucumcari offers a quality of life that's as attractive to families and retirees looking for a friendly, small-town atmosphere as it is to businesses looking for a competitive business environment.

The Tucumcari area offers an ample supply of recreation to keep one fit, active and socially invigorated. Residents and visitors alike enjoy fishing, boating, hiking and watching wildlife at Conchas Lake and Ute Lake State Parks, just a short drive away. Both lakes offer swimming, water skiing, and camping in addition to excellent fishing.

For a rural community with a population of approximately 5500, Tucumcari has many cultural activities. Two popular museums include the Mesalands Community College's Dinosaur Museum, featuring the largest collection of bronze prehistoric dinosaurs in the world, and the Tucumcari Historical Museum. Popular annual events include the Rotary Air Show, horse shows and rodeos, arts and crafts fairs, a lively performing arts calendar, and the annual Christmas Light Parade.

Maintaining a safe, healthy environment is of utmost importance to the community of Tucumcari and Quay County - especially for the growth and development of children. Law enforcement, provided by the county sheriff and the local police department, help keep Tucumcari's crime rate low.

Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital, a 37-bed acute care hospital, offers primary and specialty services including general medicine, surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics, pediatrics and long-term care. A full-service emergency room includes a heliport pad for transportation to regional hospitals.

In recent years, Tucumcari citizens have been working hard on the restoration of several historic buildings in the downtown area. Plans are in the works to renovate the early 20th century Train Depot and the Princess Theatre, both historic and classic structures

The cooperative spirit in Tucumcari is a reflection of the pride its people have in their city. From involvement in government, schools, and churches to participation in numerous civic clubs and organizations, every citizen in Tucumcari pulls together to make Tucumcari a better place to live.
